"Jakarta probably has the worst traffic in the world," says Luke Rowe, JLL's Head of Residential Project Marketing in Indonesia. With a population of 26.5 million, it's easy to see how traffic jams start in the bustling metropolis. This congestion, coupled with rising affluence, has led residents to have a change of attitude when it comes to apartment living, which Rowe says has become "trendy." He says many Jakarta residents are now buying or renting apartments closer to work while maintaining their suburban homes in order to avoid commutes that could take more than two hours each way. "It's not going to stop. The only way is vertical for the city," says Rowe.
